Coffee Grounds

The smell of coffee in the morning is how most of us start the day. Weather hot or cold, Canadians drink about 2-3 cups of coffee a day. This amounts to approximately 70,000 tons of coffee grounds produced across Canada everyday !

All of these grounds usually go to the compost pile or ends up in a landfill. We are looking at coffee grounds as a source material to create single-use products, get one more use out of it before it is returned to the earth. Coffee grounds don’t need to be mined, extracted or heavily processed; And we make it everyday so as long as we keep drinking coffee, there will always be a supply.

Our current experiments are based on natural binders and mechanical operations in order to hold the coffee fibers together. We are currently developing methods to create compostable packaging and replacements for single-use plastics (especially those included in the 2021 single-use plastic ban).
